The rated capacity of most shears for mild steel is 60,000 psi tensile strength; other heavyduty shears will have their capacity rated at 80,000 psi material strength. Be aware that ASTM steels specify the minimum strength, but not the maximum. Required force to shear metal increases as the square of the material thickness. Plate that is only slightly thicker than normal can require much more force to shear.
Reducing blade gap can increase the force needed to shear. Too much blade gap will also reduce the shear's capacity because of the tearing and beveling of the material. Use the appropriate blade gap to produce an acceptable cut quality.
Dull blades can reduce the shear capacity by as much as 50 % . Tonnage requirements depend on many different variables to calculate the tonnage for shearing one inch material.
